Grasping the Client Mind

Leveraging demographics and psychographics to connect more deeply with your clients

Read time: 1 minute

It’s not enough to know our client’s situation.

We also need to understand how they think.

This is the difference between demographics and psychographics.

In unison, these two areas of exploration paint you a picture of your ideal client.

Demographics are who they are.

Psychographics are why they buy.

Demographics give you an exterior view.

Psychographics reveal true motivations.

Understanding the client mind is crucial.

It guides our approach to branding, marketing, and selling.

It allows us to create effective designs, captivating stories, and relatable headlines.

…an emotionally compelling brand.

Demographics are easy to figure out.

These are the tangible traits.

The easily observable.

  • How old are they?

  • What gender are they?

  • Where do they live?

  • Are they well educated?

  • What kind of job do they have?

Psychographics are the complex inner world.

These are the behaviors, attitudes, and interests.

The personal experiences and nuanced emotions.

  • What do they value in life?

  • What tribes do they belong to?

  • What kind of lifestyle do they live?

  • What are their purchasing triggers?

  • What are their fears and frustrations?

  • What are their wants and aspirations?

  • What are their preferences and turn-offs?

Unraveling the Complexities of Psychographics

These questions take lots of research and critical thought.

Even then, we may not be accurate.

Here’s how you can better your chances:

Study human psychology.

Study yourself and your interactions with others.

Study your past/current clients and your biggest fans.

Study your audience by talking to them and asking vital questions.

A Holistic Branding Approach

Demographics will tell you the gender and age of a buyer.

Psychographics will tell you if they prefer coffee or tea.

We need to understand our ideal client at both of these levels.

It allows us to connect with them on a deeper level and build a more authentic brand.
