How to Captivate with Clarity

Simplify to Amplify: Your Path to Clear Communication

Read time: 1.5 minutes

Conciseness is a superpower.

More often than not, less pleases more.

We’re bombarded daily by info and obligations, more than ever before.

Our challenge?

Capture attention quickly… and keep it.

Our Consumption of the Written Word

We consume text in chunks...

One intriguing line leads to the next.

The moment interest wanes, we shift focus.

Every title and subject line must grab and hold attention.

Fail — and your message gets lost in the abyss.

Succeed — and readers will dig deeper, moving from your bio to your link, then your opt-in form.

The Power of Precision

Concise messaging:

  • Respects the reader's time

  • Cuts through the online clutter

  • Enhances interest and response

Conciseness is the “work smart, not hard” of writing.

How to Be Concise

Plan Ahead —

Outline your core message and supporting ideas before writing.

Use Direct Language —

Active voice (e.g. “The team completed the project”) is shorter and clearer than passive voice (e.g. “The project was completed by the team”).

Eliminate Fillers —

Many adjectives and adverbs are unnecessary, and many phrases can be shortened (e.g. ‘in order to’ → ‘to’).

Avoid Jargon —

Opt for simple, universally understood language. Try writing to a 10-year-old.

Edit Ruthlessly —

Revisit and trim your content. I typically spend twice as much time editing as I do writing.

Questions to Ask When Editing

  • How can I shorten the text without losing the main points?

  • What sections, tangents, phrases, or words don’t need to be there?

  • Are there multi-word phrases that could be swapped for single words?

Increase Speed and Quality with Technology

I’ve found tools like ChatGPT invaluable for brainstorming, outlining, researching.

They’re also great for editing, rewording, identifying redundancies.

This has super boosted my productivity and output quality 🚀

Conciseness isn’t just about keeping text short…

It's about making every word matter.
