Simple Trick for a More Professional Design

Read time: Under 1 minute

Which do you like better — left or right?

The title on the right is more professional and improves readability. The different font sizes and the distance between the lines create a distinct contrast.

Contrast is a crucial design principle that creates visual interest and guides the viewer's eye.

But how do we make it work?

Here’s the trick…

The contrast must be obvious.

Obvious contrast improves design and creates a more positive user experience.

The contrast should feel like a deliberate decision.

This goes for any opposites: small and big, thin and thick, light and dark, smooth and rough, yin and yang…

Today’s example is from a typography book I’m reading.

LEFT — the word “WORLD” is only slightly bigger than the other words. This looks hesitant and amateurish.

RIGHT — the word “WORLD” is much bigger than the other words, and the smaller words are farther away. The designer created contrast by using different sized fonts and adding space between the lines. This looks professional and makes more of an impact on the reader.

Give this a try next time you’re making a similar design decision.

And feel free to send me any design of yours to review — I’ll give you some feedback on how to make it better.
