Today I have a question for you…
Probably the most important question you can ask…
To craft a personality-driven brand that reflects your true self.
Ready?
Here we go, Joe…
The Key Question in Branding Yourself
What do you want to be known for?
If it helps, there’s also another way to frame this question:
How do you want people to describe you to others?
While we have dozens of personality traits, it’s rare that we show them all.
We need to choose the version of ourselves that we present to the world.

To answer this question, dig deep into your values, strengths, passions, traits, quirks, and wild experiences.
Get crystal clear on your standout factor.
Why is this important for your business?
The Impact of Defining Your Brand
Branding yourself means crafting an identity that screams YOU.
Asking what you want to be known for does a few things:
Draws on your values and personality.
Allows you to create a unique brand identity.
Attracts clients who resonate with you and your stories.
Helps you make better business decisions and design choices.
What about my brand? 🧐
What do I want to be known for?
The things I want to be known for are:
Being knowledgable in branding and design.
Being helpful to others who care.
Making people laugh.
…and here’s how I’m trying to realize each of these:
→ Being knowledgable in design
I’ve been designing for 20+ years and enjoy teaching the fundamentals.
⭐ Design tip #102:
Leverage white space to let your content breathe. It improves readability and helps important elements stand out.

→ Helping people who care
I love being an art director and giving helpful feedback.
Ditch the light bulb and center the text in your banner.
The light bulb is cliché and generic, and it doesn’t match your messaging.
Plus, Twitter’s mobile UI is covering your text:

→ Being silly
I love jokes and wacky fun… so I share content like this once in a while:
Knock knock.
Who's there?
Brand.
Brand who?
Brand new joke!

Lame?
Maybe.
Fun?
I think so.
Genuine?
Abso-fucking-lutely!
Sometimes I write content just to make myself laugh 🤪
And that’s ok…
There are lots people who resonate with my type of humour.
Sure, I’m tweeting into the void most of the time… as my account is still small.
But it’s growing day by day as I show more of my personality and connect with people on a genuine level.
So how can you put this into practice?
Tailor Your Content to Reflect Your Brand
Some example actions for various personality traits:
Are you…
Fair? → Tell more underdog stories.
Factual? → Avoid clickbait headlines.
Creative? → Explore innovative ideas.
Sophisticated? → Ditch the dad jokes.
Fun? → Use jokes, games, and puzzles.
Spiritual? → Reflect on your experiences.
Adventurous? → Share your travel stories.
Sassy? → Use that winking tongue emoji 😜
This isn’t just about online content, either…
The way you speak and behave should be aligned across the board:
Your colour choices
Your profile picture
Your email sign-off
The way you communicate with clients
The long-term business decisions you make
Everything!
Now it’s your turn…
→ What do you want to be known for?
